Industry Research

Unfortunately there is a distinct lack of research available about the labour recruitment industry. This is due to a number of reasons including lack of regulation that insists on the collation of stats and figures, lack of resources and the general reluctance of members of the labour recruitment industry to provide information to those attempting to do research.
It would be beneficial to the labour recruitment industry as a whole, if more accurate information was available. It would allow bodies like APSO and CAPES to present accurate and compelling evidence as to the size and importance of the industry. Increasing the amount of research and collation of accurate data is high on the list of priorities of both associations and we urge all members to positively participate and contribute when asked to ensure the protection and continuance of the labour recruitment industry.
Given research recently conducted (2006/7) into the industry, the following facts have been published:
  • There are around 3500 Private Employment Agencies in SA.
  • They place around 800 000 daily average temporary staff in SA on any day.
  • The size of the industry in terms of Rand worth is R17 billion per annum.
  • On average, 15% of temporary assignees convert to perm.
  • 83% of assignees comprise black persons and many of these are youth and female.

The socio-economic contribution of the Private Employment Agency industry is therefore valuable and CAPES is currently engaging the social partners at BUSA and NEDLAC levels in this regard.  For more information please visit the CAPES website www.capes.org.za
